  • Off in the distance, he made out riders galloping over the hardpan desert.

  • As the riders neared, he recognized their leader, the governor of Galicia, Francisco Vasquez de Coronado.

  • Niza took a breath and steeled himself for what was surely to come.

  • It did not matter what earthly or physical tortures this ruthless man would inflict upon him for his deceit.

  • His soul belonged to a higher power.

  • Narrator

    Niza stepped out of the pueblo onto the path leading outside, clearly visible to Coronado.

  • The riders approached the priest and made a circle around him, making escape impossible.

  • The gesture was unnecessary;

  • he did not plan to escape.

  • Coronado dismounted, kicking up dust as his feet hit the ground.

  • Niza took a breath as the imposing conquistador stepped deliberately toward him.

  • Narrator

    Coronado removed his steel helmet and dropped it.
