The Guardians of Elijah's Fire - Book 2

  • CHAPTER 1

  • Narrator

Even with the door latched on my mailbox at the Nordwall Student Center, I could see it brimming with all sorts of goodies.

  • The colored corners of envelopes stuck out from the mail slot as I eagerly inserted my key, and a barrage of birthday cards and small packages toppled from the opening.

  • I had just turned fifteen years old, and in one week I would take my learner’s permit exam and would be legally allowed behind the wheel of a car.

  • Of course, there would have to be a licensed driver in the vehicle with me until I turned sixteen, but I would be driving.

  • The fading sunlight shone through the Student Center window, and the bell tower on the grounds of the quad released several echoing chimes.

  • It was five o’clock, and my stomach instinctively rumbled.

I had been too busy with homework and studying to eat breakfast or lunch.

  • After shoveling the cards and packages into my backpack, I headed out toward the refectory for dinner.

  • Later that evening, tons of cash, gift certificates, and birthday cards with corny messages lay strewn about my bed.

  • My parents had already sent me the bulk of my gifts a few days earlier on my actual birthday, but that didn’t stop them from sending me more.

  • Only one package remained for me to open.

  • I stared at the small, rectangular box wrapped with brown paper, turning it over in my hands in search of a return address.

  • Narrator

    There was none.

  • It felt slightly heavy as I shook the package and the contents shifted.

    Amber

    “Oh yes!”

  • Narrator

I pumped my fist in celebration.

  • My dad had hinted he would be sending me a new smartphone, and this package seemed just the right size.

  • I couldn’t wait to see how this one compared to my friend Trendon’s latest electronic contraption.

  • As I tore off the paper, I felt my spirits fade.
